Capella Tower, located in downtown Minneapolis, has welcomed visitors from multiple entrances for over 20 years. And now, after all this time, the Tower that stands so prominently in the city's skyline needed to be reimagined.
Some aspects of the 58-story building, in particular, demanded special attention. Specifically, the transformation needed to have a focus on how workers, visitors and pedestrians entered, exited and used the facility’s public spaces.
Ryan Companies general manager Ted Campbell said, “We had a handful of problems. One was the entry way and presence when you came in the building," adding that some areas were too "cavernous."

Campbell said some of the reasons for making the transformation was to improve efficiency for its 4,000 occupants and take advantage of underutilized space.
AVI Systems partnered with Ryan Companies and Perkins + Will Architecture to overhaul the facility’s public spaces, which included the main entrances, the lounge and front porch, tech lounge, group fitness room, and more.
To provide a comprehensive technology solution, AVI Systems and its partners looked closely at each of the public spaces and the audiovisual solutions needed to deliver interactivity, way-finding, adaptable tenant managed directories, memorable branding and ad hoc presentation, among other solutions, for this project.
Afterward, AVI Systems helped implement these solutions that created an appealing and comfortable area for people to visit. The end result was received well, as people took to the open, casual areas, as well as the numerous spaces for public and private meetings.
“The highest praise is that we never had to tell anybody what to do,” Campbell said. “The day the walls came down, people just flocked down there, got their coffee, sat down by the fire … it’s just fantastic.”
